I’m a Vietnamese-American. I consider myself bi-cultural and since I’m taking a cultural diversity anthropology class, I was curious if it was possible to combine the wedding traditions of two cultures into one ceremony. I asked my mom one question about marriage and she flipped. “Why are you already asking questions about marriage? You’re young. You can’t date and you need to focus on school.” So since I’m “young” I guess I’m not allowed to wonder or get answers to things I just want to know about for the hell of it. Maybe it was the question that set her off but it’s not like I’m going to run away in the middle of the night and elope. Hell no! I wish she would realize that I’m smarter than that. I only asked the question because I was curious, calm down mother…
And I can’t date because I have to focus on school? She also told me I can’t try out for the cheer and dance team since it won’t count towards anything academically. Aside from asking questions, am I not allowed to have any fun either?? You know, life isn’t all about getting a good education and making that paper. It’s about looking up and enjoying all that the world has to offer, you can’t do that with your nose stuck in a textbook. I actually feel a bit of sadness for those types of people…
Curiosity is the driving force behind intelligence. Creativity lies in the unknown. If I’m not allowed to be curious, I’m not entitled to either. What’s the point of living a life when you can’t explore new experiences for fun? To believe that these feelings of disempowerment were caused by my mom is disappointing, and it really sucks.
